When Should I Keep My Child Home From School?
Fever: Students should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin. A fever is any temperature over 100.4 F.
Diarrhea: Students with diarrhea due to an illness should stay home for 24 hours after their symptoms resolve.
Vomiting: Students who vomit due to an illness should stay home for 24 hours after their symptoms resolve and be able to tolerate a soft diet without nausea.
Other Communicable Diseases or Infections:
Chicken Pox: Until all of the lesions have scabbed, usually 5-7 days
Impetigo Contagiosa: Twenty-four hours after the institution of appropriate treatment.
- Infectious Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Until judged not infective; that is, without discharge. (Typically 24 hours after starting treatment)
- Pediculosis Capitis (Lice): May return to school after the first treatment. There should be no live lice and a reduction in the number of nits. The student will be reexamined for infestation by the School Nurse seven (7) days post treatment.
- Respiratory Virus: Influenza, Covid 19, and others: Follow the PA Department of Health / CDC guidance for return to school and consult your child's physician.Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You're Sick | Respiratory Illnesses | CDC
- Ringworm: The person shall be allowed to return to school after the first treatment, if body lesions are covered. Neither scalp nor body lesions that are dried need to be covered.
- Strep Throat: Twenty-four hours after the institution of appropriate treatment.
